Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo has been struck by a heartbreaking family tragedy after his wife and two young children were found dead following the devastating earthquakes that rocked Venezuela.
Trejo’s wife, Yanina Maranella, and their children, Aarón and Ainhoa, had been missing since two powerful earthquakes struck the South American nation last Wednesday. After an intensive search that lasted more than 72 hours, rescue teams recovered their bodies, bringing a tragic end to the desperate efforts to locate them.
The devastating news was confirmed by family friend and fellow footballer Edson Tortolero in a heartfelt social media post. He thanked everyone who had offered support during the search and appealed for privacy and respect for Trejo and his grieving family during the difficult period.
Trejo’s club, Club Sport Marítimo de La Guaira, also expressed its condolences in an official statement, mourning the loss and acknowledging the painful outcome of the search operation.
The 38-year-old defender, who has spent much of his professional career playing in Venezuela, had recently shared family photos on social media. In April, he celebrated his wife’s birthday with an emotional message, praying for God’s continued blessings upon her life.
Reports from Argentina said Trejo’s father and brother traveled to Venezuela to support him throughout the agonizing search for his family.
The earthquakes, which measured 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, caused widespread destruction across parts of Venezuela, leaving thousands of families affected. Rescue teams continue to search through the rubble as authorities assess the full scale of the disaster.
The football community has since rallied around Trejo, with teammates, clubs and supporters offering messages of sympathy as he mourns the loss of his wife and children.
