The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) will on Monday, October 26, unveil its National Campaign Council for the 2027 general elections and present its statement of account at the party’s third National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja.
The party will also present certificates of return to its candidates contesting the presidential, National Assembly, governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the meeting will commence at 10 a.m. at JD Event Centre, Kashim Ibrahim Way, opposite A-Class Park, Maitama, Abuja.
Director said the presentation of the party’s financial statement by the National Treasurer would be one of the major highlights of the meeting, describing the move as part of the NDC’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
He challenged other political parties, particularly the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), to adopt similar measures in managing their finances.
“For the NDC, it is no longer politics as usual,” he said.
Explaining the party’s financial position, Director attributed its limited resources partly to the economic hardship facing Nigerians, which he blamed on the APC-led administration.
He claimed that about 80 per cent of the party’s candidates could not afford the Expression of Interest forms because of poverty, hunger and deprivation, forcing the party to provide the forms free of charge to eligible candidates.
The statement added that the National Campaign Council would cover candidates contesting various positions, including the presidency, National Assembly, governorship and state legislative seats.
According to the party, the unveiling would help consolidate its campaign structures and strengthen preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The NDC is turbo-charged and ready to give Nigerians the altruistic leadership the nation deserves. A New Nigeria is Possible. We can do it!” the statement said.
The planned unveiling follows the postponement of the campaign council’s inauguration, which was initially scheduled for October 20.
The party had attributed the postponement to the tight schedule of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and an important commitment abroad. The inauguration was subsequently rescheduled for October 26 to coincide with the NEC meeting.
The meeting is also expected to feature key decisions on the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections.
Meanwhile, the NDC National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, had dismissed claims that the party was inactive or divided, insisting that its leadership remained committed to the Obi-Kwankwaso presidential ticket.
Cleopas said the National Working Committee had held several meetings since August and submitted proposals on the composition of the campaign council for consideration by the party leadership.
The NEC meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for the party to review its preparations and outline its next steps towards the 2027 general elections.
