Former Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, is set to seek re-election in 2027 to continue representing Yobe North Senatorial District, extending a legislative career that has already spanned 27 years in Nigeria’s National Assembly.
Lawan began his journey in the National Assembly in 1999 when he was elected into the House of Representatives, where he served until 2007. He subsequently moved to the Senate in 2007 and has remained a member of the upper legislative chamber since then.
By 2027, the veteran lawmaker will mark 28 consecutive years as a federal legislator, making him one of the longest-serving lawmakers in Nigeria’s democratic history.
Before venturing into politics, Lawan worked as a lecturer, a career he eventually left behind to pursue public service and partisan politics.
Over the years, the Yobe-born politician has occupied several strategic positions in the National Assembly, including serving as Senate President from 2019 to 2023. He has also chaired and participated in key committees handling national issues ranging from defence to education and petroleum matters.
His decision to seek another term is expected to further strengthen his influence within the ruling political establishment as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum.
