Hayatu-Deen Dumps PDP, Joins ADC Ahead of 2027 Election

Economist, banker, and former presidential hopeful, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing worsening insecurity, rising living costs, and what he described as a shrinking space for democracy in Nigeria.

In a statement issued through his media office on Sunday, Hayatu-Deen—who previously contested the 2022 presidential primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party—said his decision was motivated by deep concerns over the country’s economic and political direction.

He argued that many Nigerians are increasingly frustrated by hardship and are demanding a credible political alternative that can restore security, stabilise the economy, and create jobs. He also warned that democratic institutions are under pressure, with opposition voices and genuine political competition gradually being weakened.

According to him, his entry into the African Democratic Congress is driven by a desire to contribute his experience in economic reform, private sector leadership, and public service toward national recovery.

Hayatu-Deen said he plans to actively campaign for the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that Nigeria urgently needs “a steady and credible alternative” capable of delivering real change and improving citizens’ welfare.

He added that from now until 2027, he will work within the party to help build momentum for what he described as a national rescue mission.
