According to recent research, medical experts have advised men to be sexually active as a way to prevent prostate cancer. Dr Caleb Yakubu, the Coordinator of the One-Stop-Breast Cancer Clinic at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), shared this advice during a conference in Lagos on Friday.
Dr Yakubu explained that ejaculation helps to prevent the buildup of potentially harmful substances in the prostate gland, reducing the risk of developing cancer. When men ejaculate, the prostate gland empties itself of fluids that may contain cancer-causing agents. Regular sexual activity can effectively flush out these harmful substances, maintaining a healthy prostate.
In addition to sexual activity, Dr Yakubu highlighted the importance of maintaining a balanced diet in prostate cancer prevention. He advised men to incorporate antioxidant-rich foods, such as fruits and vegetables, into their daily meals. Antioxidants protect the body’s cells from damage and minimize the risk of developing cancer.
Regular check-ups and screenings are also crucial for early detection of prostate cancer. Dr Yakubu urged men over the age of 40 to undergo regular prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests to monitor their prostate health.
Prostate cancer is the leading cancer in men, with over 1.4 million new cases diagnosed globally each year. In Nigeria, it is the most common cancer among men and causes a significant number of deaths.
Dr Yakubu’s advice serves as a wake-up call for men to proactively protect their prostate health. Sexual activity, combined with a balanced diet and regular check-ups, can be effective tools in the fight against prostate cancer. By raising awareness about these preventive measures, it is hoped that more men will take the necessary steps to reduce their risk of developing this potentially deadly disease.
