Tensions escalated sharply in the Gulf after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. Navy would begin blocking ships entering and leaving the Strait of Hormuz, following the breakdown of high-level peace talks with Iran in Islamabad.
Trump accused Tehran of refusing to abandon its nuclear ambitions and warned of further military action, including strikes on Iranian infrastructure, if it continued what he described as “extortion” through control of the strategic waterway. He also directed U.S. forces to intercept vessels allegedly paying tolls to Iran and vowed to clear the strait of any mines.
The negotiations, led on the U.S. side by Vice President JD Vance and other officials, reportedly collapsed after Iran rejected key nuclear-related demands. Tehran, however, insisted the strait remains open to civilian vessels, warning that military ships would face a strong response.
The crisis has raised global alarm over energy security, with oil prices already fluctuating amid fears of supply disruption. Analysts warn crude could climb further if tensions persist.
International leaders have urged restraint. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called for continued ceasefire efforts, while Pope Pope Leo XIV condemned the “delusion of omnipotence” driving the conflict and urged a return to dialogue.
Energy officials, including ADNOC CEO Sultan Al Jaber, warned that any closure or restriction of the Strait of Hormuz could trigger severe global economic and humanitarian consequences, given its role as a key oil shipping route.
As uncertainty deepens, markets remain on edge, with fears that a wider confrontation could push global crude prices even higher.
