Ibeno LG Boss Rallies Community to End Gender-Based Violence

The Executive Chairman of Ibeno Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Hon. Glory Ekah, has issued a passionate appeal to residents, urging unified action in support of the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

Speaking at Upenekang during a sensitisation campaign titled “Standing Together Against Gender-Based Violence” on Saturday, Ekah emphasized the need for collective responsibility across societal pillars — including religious, traditional, and educational institutions — to stem the tide of abuse and violence in communities.

“Gender-based violence is not just a private tragedy; it tears at the very fabric of our families, schools, places of worship, and society as a whole,” she said.

Ekah called on all stakeholders — from traditional rulers and religious leaders to parents and security agencies — to lend their voice and influence in changing harmful norms and attitudes that perpetuate abuse.

“Your support is necessary if we must see lasting changes. Respect and abstinence should be seen as marks of strength, not weakness,” she stated, encouraging young people to pursue a life rooted in discipline and self-respect.

Addressing domestic violence directly, Ekah warned against relationships rooted in control and humiliation, emphasizing that:

“True love uplifts, protects, and honors. A home should not be a battlefield. When a partner is degraded or injured, that is not love.”

She praised the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Helen Eno, and commended Lady Obareki’s ongoing efforts to create a support system for survivors of GBV across the state.

“I salute Lady Obareki’s unwavering commitment to healing victims and building a safer Akwa Ibom. Her advocacy has created space where victims are heard, protected, and empowered,” Ekah noted.

She also acknowledged the administration of Governor Umo Eno, crediting his leadership for fostering a climate where justice and compassion for GBV survivors can thrive.

“Let us speak where silence once ruled. Let us protect those in danger. Let us teach our children what is right. Let us love with respect,” she concluded, calling on Ibeno citizens to stand united in eradicating GBV from the grassroots level.

The sensitisation event is part of ongoing community-based interventions aimed at increasing awareness and transforming public attitudes around gender-based violence in Akwa Ibom.
