The National Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing concerns over ballot paper congestion.
Basiru made the appeal on Friday during an interview on Arise Television, stating that Nigeria should not have ballot papers crowded with parties he described as “unviable.”
According to him, the APC is not worried about claims that the country is drifting toward a one-party system. He noted that Nigeria still has about 19 registered political parties, although some lack electoral relevance.
“We’re calling on INEC to deregister the ADC. We don’t want ballot papers cluttered with unviable political parties,” Basiru said.
He argued that the Nigerian Constitution provides clear guidelines for deregistering parties that fail to meet required electoral thresholds, adding that the APC is merely urging institutions to uphold the law.
Basiru also pointed out that there are ongoing court cases seeking the deregistration of the ADC, expressing confidence that INEC would act within its legal powers.
He further criticized the party, describing it as more “noise than action,” and dismissed it as part of what he termed a “coalition of confusion.”
