FG Says New National Shipping Line Will Launch Soon

The Federal Government has expressed optimism that Nigeria’s long-awaited national shipping carrier will soon become operational, marking a key milestone in efforts to revitalise the country’s maritime sector.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, made this known during a stakeholders’ engagement and performance retreat in Lagos, where he highlighted ongoing measures to strengthen indigenous shipping capacity.

He disclosed that substantial progress has been made toward re-establishing a national carrier, adding that discussions with global partners are already at an advanced stage. According to him, prominent international firms such as AD Ports Group and DP World have shown strong interest in partnering with Nigeria on the project.

Oyetola noted that the initiative is expected to reduce the nation’s reliance on foreign shipping companies, boost local participation in maritime trade, and create jobs within the sector.

He also linked the development to broader reforms, including the planned disbursement of the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund, aimed at supporting indigenous shipowners and enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in global shipping.
