Police Issue Security Alert Over Terror Threat to Churches in Kogi

The Nigeria Police Force has issued a high-level security alert following credible intelligence indicating a terrorist plot targeting churches in Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State. The alert has triggered calls for immediate action by religious leaders and the implementation of heightened security measures.

A confidential memo dated May 20, 2025, signed by Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Kanwai James, Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Isanlu, was directed to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Yagba East. The document urges churches to suspend night vigils and reinforce their internal security systems.

According to the memo, criminal groups operating in Yagba East and Yagba West have finalised plans for coordinated attacks on worship centres. Church leaders are instructed to promptly share the intelligence across all congregations and prioritise vigilance.

“In view of that, you are hereby informed to intensify efforts in disseminating the information to all churches in Yagba East to be vigilant and security conscious in order to avert their nefarious activities,” the message states.

Churches are advised to deploy internal security teams—such as the Boys Brigade and other volunteer groups—during services to safeguard congregants. All-night services should be suspended until further notice.

Security agencies, including the Police, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), local vigilantes, and hunters, have reportedly stepped up patrols and surveillance around worship centres, especially during service hours.

Attempts to reach CSP Kanwai for further comment were unsuccessful, as calls to his line went unanswered.

The warning comes amid growing insecurity in the Okun region of Kogi West, where kidnappings and violent attacks have surged. A 90-year-old traditional ruler and a 76-year-old retired army officer remain in captivity after recent abductions.

Residents are urged to remain alert and report suspicious activity to nearby security agencies.
