The Rivers State Government has responded to recent rumors regarding Governor Siminalayi Fubara allegedly ordering the shutdown of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and all oil companies operating in the state. The government characterized the reports as “spurious” and “concocted propaganda” designed by those with ulterior motives.
In an official statement, Warisenibo Joe Johnson, the Honorable Commissioner for Information and Communications, stated, “The attention of the Rivers State Government has been drawn to a false news item circulating on social media regarding Governor Siminalayi Fubara shutting down NNPCL and all oil companies in Rivers State.” Johnson emphasized that the claims were fabricated and originated from “inconsequential and unverified” sources.
Governor Fubara, according to the statement, is firmly committed to upholding the rule of law and does not resort to “unconventional and crude approaches” to govern. “We therefore enjoin Rivers people and well-meaning Nigerians to discountenance the spurious and fake report,” Johnson added, asserting that the governor never considered or directed any such drastic action that would disrupt the state’s economy.
The government urges the public to be vigilant and critical of unverified information, reaffirming its dedication to responsible governance and economic stability in Rivers State. The denial comes as the governor continues to promote lawful practices in managing state affairs.
