Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has been reinstated as the Emir of Kano, according to sources.
This development comes after the Kano State House of Assembly passed a resolution to dethrone the current Emir and abolish the four new Emirates created in 2019.
Although an official announcement is yet to be made, Sanusi II is expected to return to Kano on Friday.
As stated by a source who spoke to Leadership “With the passage of the Bill, Sanusi automatically stands reinstated. No need for confirmation, we just need to wait for the Governor to assent to it.”
The 2019 restructuring of the Kano Emirate was seen as a political move to reduce the influence of Emir Sanusi II, a vocal critic of the then-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje administration.
The creation of new emirates fragmented the authority of the old Kano Emirate Council, diluting its power and influence.
