Swedish Government Returns Looted Benin Artefacts

The Swedish government has announced its decision to return 39 Benin Artefacts to the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II.

This move follows the Nigerian government’s gazette (No. 57, Vol. 110, March 23, 2023) recognizing the Oba’s ownership and custody of repatriated Benin artefacts.

During a courtesy visit to the Oba’s palace, Swedish Ambassador Annika Hahn-Englund conveyed the decision, stating, “Also, I would like to mention that with cooperation we have in culture, education with Nigeria, I would like to mention the decision of why the Swedish government has to return 39 artefacts to Benin Kingdom.”

Oba Ewuare II expressed his gratitude, saying, “Edo people also welcome this decision.”

He acknowledged the progress of the Benin Royal Museum project and commended partners for their support.

The Oba also praised the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) for preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

He noted that the demand for the return of looted Benin artefacts had been ongoing since Oba Akenzua II’s reign, saying, “And you are here today (Wednesday) telling us that it has been approved. This has been my request long time ago. God’s time is always the best.”

The Ambassador presented a souvenir to Oba Ewuare II, who reciprocated with a copy of the federal government gazette on Benin artefacts.
