A former National Assembly candidate of the Labour Party, Dr Emmanuel Ezeh, has dismissed speculations of a zoning crisis within the party in Ebonyi State, describing the claims as politically motivated attempts aimed at importing “old political traditions” into what he called a progressive political movement.
Ezeh made the remarks while reacting to recent discussions suggesting internal disagreement over zoning arrangements within the Labour Party structure in Ebonyi State.
According to him, the narrative of a zoning crisis is being deliberately promoted by political actors who are uncomfortable with the Labour Party’s emerging identity and growing influence in the state.
He argued that zoning arrangements, as practiced in Nigeria’s political system over the years, have not significantly strengthened democratic governance or improved leadership outcomes.
Instead, Ezeh maintained that Nigerians are increasingly shifting their attention away from zoning politics and are now more interested in issue-based campaigns, accountability, and leaders capable of delivering democratic dividends.
He further emphasized that the Labour Party represents a break from “old political traditions,” insisting that internal cohesion should be guided by competence, ideology, and service delivery rather than regional power-sharing formulas.
Ezeh called on party members in Ebonyi and beyond to remain focused on strengthening the party’s structures and sustaining its reform-oriented agenda, warning against distractions that could undermine its progress.
