NDC Clarifies Position on Possible Defection of Obi, Kwankwaso

The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), , has stated that the reported defection of and from the (ADC) to the NDC remains a matter of probability, not certainty.

Abdulsalam made the clarification on Saturday while reacting to media reports suggesting that both politicians were set to join the NDC. Earlier reports had quoted him as appearing to support claims of an imminent defection.

In a statement, Abdulsalam explained that his earlier comments were misinterpreted, noting that they were made in response to an inquiry by a journalist and were based on possibilities rather than confirmed developments.

“My recent response to a rare inquiry by a print journalist regarding the possibility of defections of the duo… dwelt more on the realm of probability rather than certainty,” he said.

He expressed concern over what he described as “politically sensitive reportage” that had been amplified across various media platforms, leading to what he termed over-sensationalization of the issue.

Reiterating the party’s stance, Abdulsalam said the NDC remains open to welcoming politicians from across the political spectrum but does not compel or predetermine defections.

According to him, the party has consistently encouraged both ruling and opposition figures to join what he described as a “Noah’s Ark” initiative championed by its national leadership, aimed at consolidating forces for national development.

He added that while the NDC is engaged in ongoing discussions with key opposition leaders, including members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), it respects the freedom of politicians to choose their political affiliations.

“While discussions with key opposition leaders… are ongoing, the hierarchy of the NDC shall continue to keep its doors open for whoever wants to come into the party’s fold to salvage the nation,” Abdulsalam said.

He further noted that talks among opposition parties on forming alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections are still in progress, and the possibility of future defections, including those of Obi and Kwankwaso, has not been ruled out.
