Edo State Flags Off 2026 Farming Season, Urges Farmers on Innovation

The Edo State Government has officially launched the 2026 farming season, urging farmers across the state to embrace innovation, adopt best practices, and make full use of improved agricultural inputs provided by the government.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held at the State Agric Hub over the weekend, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Jerry Uwangue, said the event was not only to mark the beginning of the farming calendar but also to sensitise farmers on the need for timely planting and modern farming techniques.

He emphasised the importance of using quality inputs such as improved seeds, fertilisers, agrochemicals, and mechanised tools, noting that these significantly boost productivity and ensure food availability.

“Experience has shown that early and well-coordinated planting, combined with the use of quality inputs, significantly increases productivity, enhances crop yield, and ultimately guarantees food availability for our growing population,” he said.

Uwangue reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening agriculture as a key pillar of the state’s economy, saying the initiative aligns with Governor’s SHINE Agenda, particularly its focus on economic growth and food security.

He added that the state would continue to create an enabling environment for farmers and agribusinesses to thrive, while urging farmers to remain committed and open to modern agricultural practices.

“The success of this season largely depends on your commitment, resilience, and willingness to adapt to modern techniques,” he stated.

He also called on local government councils and agricultural extension workers to intensify farmer mobilisation and education across communities.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mrs. Rebecca Osedebamen Bamaiyi, described the event as a platform for farmers, agribusiness operators, and partners to access improved inputs and gain practical knowledge on modern farming methods.
