Tinubu Meets Shettima, Governors in Lagos, Pledges Stronger Action on Insecurity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity nationwide, vowing to intensify efforts to restore peace and stability.

The president made this known on Sunday while hosting Vice President Kashim Shettima and 23 state governors at his Lagos residence during the Eid el-Fitr celebration.

Tinubu commended the governors for their unity and dedication, describing insecurity as a major obstacle to Nigeria’s growth and prosperity. He stressed that the next phase of national efforts must focus squarely on overcoming security challenges.

According to a statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the president highlighted ongoing international engagements aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security capacity. He revealed discussions with partners in the United Kingdom and Emmanuel Macron of France, noting that both countries are collaborating with Nigeria on security equipment and support.

Tinubu also urged state governors to prioritise the welfare of vulnerable citizens, warning that the ongoing Middle East crisis could worsen inflation and reduce purchasing power. He acknowledged rising fuel prices and called for proactive measures to cushion the economic impact on Nigerians.

He further encouraged governors to remain focused on implementing policies that directly improve citizens’ lives while working collectively to defeat criminal elements threatening the country.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, expressed appreciation for the president’s support to states. He assured that governors are actively collaborating to address insecurity and are advancing discussions on the establishment of state policing.

AbdulRazaq disclosed that the forum is working with security agencies under the guidance of the National Security Adviser to develop a framework for state police, which will be presented to the National Assembly for legislative backing.

Several governors from across the federation attended the meeting, reflecting a broad-based commitment to tackling the nation’s security and economic challenges.
