Abia State Governor Approves Land for Nigerian Air Force Base at Abia Airport Project Site
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved 100 hectares of land for the Nigerian Air Force to build a training base at the Abia Airport Project Site in Nsulu, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area. This decision follows a request by the Air Force to expand the initial 50 hectares allocated for the training base.
The approval was announced during a meeting between Governor Otti and a delegation of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) led by Air Vice Marshal Adebayo Gabriel Kehinde. The Governor assured that the Abia Airport runway would be ready soon, as the state government is handling the runway project, while the Federal Government is handling the Airport Terminal.
The Air Force Commander, Air Vice Marshal Kehinde, praised Abia State’s security efforts, stating that the state is ahead of other Southeast States in security. He requested additional land for the Air Force facility, including a Special Forces Training Centre for jungle warfare operations, which would enhance operational readiness and regional security.
The Abia Airport project is a joint effort between the state and federal governments, with the state government responsible for the runway and the federal government handling the terminal building. The project is expected to boost the state’s economy and create employment opportunities.
Governor Otti has targeted a 24-month completion timeline for the airport project, despite a 36-month contractual agreement with the contractor, Craneburg Construction Company. The airport is expected to be a catalyst for economic growth and development in the region.
