International Women’s Day: Oluremi Tinubu urges empowerment of women for stronger Nigeria

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for sustained efforts to advance the rights, opportunities and empowerment of women and girls, stressing that their progress is vital to national development.

In a message marking the International Women’s Day 2026 celebration, the First Lady joined Nigerians and the global community in recognising the resilience, courage and achievements of women across the country and around the world.

She noted that the annual observance offers a moment to reflect on the significant contributions women make to families, communities and national development, while also reinforcing the shared responsibility to promote gender equality and inclusiveness.

According to her, this year’s theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” highlights the need for concrete steps to ensure women enjoy equal opportunities and legal protection.

Mrs Tinubu emphasised that empowering women should be seen not as charity but as a strategic investment in the nation’s future.

“When women are given access to education, quality healthcare, economic opportunities, leadership platforms, justice and equity, the entire society benefits,” she said.

She added that empowering women strengthens families, promotes thriving communities and contributes to building a more inclusive and sustainable nation.

The First Lady also reaffirmed the commitment of the administration of Bola Tinubu to policies and initiatives aimed at improving the welfare, dignity and advancement of Nigerian women and girls.

She therefore urged stakeholders in government, the private sector, civil society and development organisations to work together to remove barriers that limit women’s full participation in national life.

Mrs Tinubu also encouraged Nigerian women and girls to remain determined and resilient in pursuing their aspirations and contributing to the country’s growth.

“When women rise, Nigeria rises,” she said.

She wished Nigerian women and girls a joyful celebration and renewed dedication to building a society where every woman and girl can thrive, adding, “Happy International Women’s Day.”
