Tinubu Chairs Police Council Meeting to Confirm Disu as Substantive IGP

Bola Tinubu is presiding over a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, a move aimed at formalising the appointment of Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, as the substantive head of the Nigeria Police Force.

The closed-door session, which commenced on Monday, is expected to ratify Disu’s nomination following the resignation of former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun. Disu has been leading the Force in an acting capacity since late February.

Sources say that once the Council endorses the nomination, the President will forward the appointment to the Senate for confirmation, in accordance with constitutional and statutory requirements.

Among those in attendance are Vice President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam; and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, alongside several state governors and other statutory members of the Council.

Chaired by the President, the Nigeria Police Council comprises the governors of the 36 states, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police. Established under the Police Act 2020, it serves as a key advisory body on policing matters.

The Council is responsible for advising the President on internal security policy, police administration, budgeting, and senior appointments and promotions within the Force. While it does not oversee daily police operations, it ensures due process is observed in significant institutional decisions, particularly the appointment of the Inspector-General of Police.

Monday’s meeting comes amid persistent security challenges across the country, highlighting the need for steady leadership within Nigeria’s policing structure. If confirmed, Disu’s elevation is expected to sustain ongoing reforms and reinforce public trust in the Force.
