An Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ogbon-Inu Taiwo Popoola, has died in Ebonyi State after collapsing during an official engagement at the state police headquarters in Abakaliki.
According to information made available to Hobnob News, the incident occurred at about 11 a.m. on Tuesday while the senior officer was attending a management meeting at the command headquarters.
Until his sudden death, Popoola served as the Officer-in-Charge of the State Intelligence Department (SID).
A police source disclosed that the late officer reportedly developed sudden breathing difficulties during the meeting and began gasping for air.
“He was immediately rushed to the Police Medical Centre at the Police Headquarters in Abakaliki, where he was promptly attended to by medical personnel,” the source said.
Despite swift medical intervention, efforts to revive him proved unsuccessful, and he was later pronounced dead by doctors.
Preliminary medical findings indicated that the cause of death was cardiac arrest linked to hypertensive heart disease.
Further reports gathered by Hobnob News revealed that his remains have been deposited at the morgue of the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.
Confirming the incident in a telephone interview on Thursday, the Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, said the officer collapsed unexpectedly during the meeting.
“Yes, one of them had a crisis during a meeting and was rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, he didn’t survive,” Ukandu stated.
He added that the late ACP was not known to be ill prior to the incident, noting that “if he were sick, he wouldn’t have attended the meeting.”
DSP Ukandu described the deceased as a dedicated and committed officer who served the Nigeria Police Force with professionalism and integrity.
