Four Killed in Fresh Gun Attack in Anambra State

At least four people were killed on Sunday in Nawfia, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, following a new gun attack.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. at Afor Market Junction along the Awka-Onitsha Old Road. This attack came hours after gunmen targeted Saint Andrew’s Anglican Church in Isiokwe, Lilu, Ihiala LGA, killing the church pastor’s wife and destroying properties worth millions. It remains unclear whether the same group was responsible for both attacks.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen drove into Nawfia in a black SUV and opened fire on residents at the junction. “Some of us ran, but several people were shot,” a resident who requested anonymity said.

A video circulating on social media shows at least four young men lying dead in pools of blood, with two bodies in a nearby gutter as residents mourned.

Daniel Okoye, President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, confirmed the attack and urged residents to remain calm, stay vigilant, and cooperate with security forces.

Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga described the incident as a cult-related attack. He noted that the police had arrested two suspects days earlier in connection with a planned cult clash, but members of the gang still carried out the deadly assault in a black Lexus Jeep. The assailants fled before police arrived, but leads from the scene are being used to track them down.

“The Anambra State Police Command remains committed to tackling cultism, violent crime, and all forms of criminality,” Ikenga said, promising updates as investigations continue.
