Panic gripped residents of Okpokwu Local Government Area on Sunday evening as a Benue Links commercial bus with registration number 14B-143BN was attacked by unidentified gunmen along the Eke axis, leading to the abduction of several passengers.

According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. when the bus, conveying commuters through the area, was ambushed by armed assailants. The gunmen reportedly robbed the passengers of their valuables before forcefully taking them into a nearby forest.
In a swift response, Comrade Austin Agada, who was passing by shortly after the incident, mobilised security operatives to the scene. He contacted both military and police personnel, who immediately launched a rescue operation.

Agada also engaged local youths and vigilante groups from three neighbouring communities, urging them to join the search effort by mounting surveillance and combing the surrounding bush paths in pursuit of the kidnappers.
Authorities have confirmed that the vehicle’s registration details and information related to the rescue operation have been communicated to an official of Benue Links to aid in coordination and ensure timely updates.
As of press time, the exact number of abducted passengers and their current whereabouts remain unknown. Security forces, along with local volunteers, continue to intensify search and rescue efforts.
The Benue State Government and law enforcement agencies have yet to issue an official statement, but residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as the situation develops.
