In a significant move aimed at curbing the persistent violence in Benue State, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has met with the state’s two foremost traditional rulers to kick-start the formation of a strategic peace committee, following a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The high-level meeting, held in Benue, brought together the Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty Orchivirigh Prof. James Ayatse, and the Och’Idoma, His Royal Majesty Agabaidu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John. It marks the beginning of President Tinubu’s renewed effort to restore peace and security in the state often referred to as Nigeria’s food basket.
Speaking during the engagement, Senator Akume conveyed the President’s deep concern over the unrelenting spate of violent attacks in the state. Describing the situation as “heartbreaking,” Akume emphasized the Federal Government’s resolve to halt the bloodshed and bring lasting stability to Benue and other affected regions.
“The President is determined to end the senseless killings in the food basket of the nation,” Akume stated.
According to a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Office of the SGF, Mr. Segun Imohiosen, the SGF also urged the royal fathers to remain vigilant in their domains and play an active role in safeguarding their communities.
“We want to appeal to you to continue to stay vigilant so that miscreants do not infiltrate the communities. Whenever you observe a breach, do not hesitate to inform us. The President will never disappoint you,” Akume assured.
The engagement is seen as a crucial step in mobilizing traditional institutions to support the Federal Government’s peacebuilding initiatives and address the security challenges facing Benue State.
