Firefighters Attacked While Responding to Fire Emergency in Ilorin

Firefighters from the Kwara State Fire Service were attacked on Saturday while responding to a distress call involving a government vehicle that had caught fire in Ilorin, the state capital.

According to Hobnob News Nigeria, the incident occurred at Adeta Roundabout, where a bus belonging to the Ministry of Environment was engulfed in flames. The fire crew rushed to the scene following an emergency alert from concerned residents, but instead of receiving cooperation, they were reportedly assaulted by unidentified individuals upon arrival.

Eyewitnesses say the situation quickly turned chaotic as the responders attempted to extinguish the flames. Some onlookers, believed to be misinformed about the cause of the fire or frustrated by delayed emergency response times, began hurling objects and threatening the firefighters, forcing them to temporarily withdraw for safety.

“They were only trying to help, and people started attacking them. It was shocking. They had to pull back before returning under police protection,” a witness at the scene told Hobnob News.

Spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service confirmed the attack, describing it as “deeply troubling and unacceptable.” He praised the bravery of the fire personnel who, despite the assault, returned to the scene under security escort and successfully extinguished the fire before it could spread to nearby properties.

“Our men were only doing their job, risking their lives to protect people and property. It’s unfortunate that they were met with hostility,” the spokesperson said.

“We urge the public to support emergency responders instead of obstructing their work. Lives depend on it.”

The cause of the vehicle fire remains under investigation, though initial reports suggest it may have been triggered by an electrical fault.

Authorities have launched a probe into the attack and are working to identify those responsible. The Kwara State Police Command has vowed to ensure that those involved face the full weight of the law.

The Kwara State Fire Service also reiterated its commitment to serving the public and called for greater awareness and cooperation from residents during emergency situations.

This incident highlights the increasing risks faced by first responders in Nigeria and raises fresh concerns about public understanding and respect for emergency services.
