Court Defers El-Rufai’s Bail Hearing to June Amid Allegations of Political Motive

A Kaduna State High Court has postponed the bail application of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to the first week of June 2026.

The presiding judge, Darius Khobo, adjourned the matter during proceedings on Tuesday, meaning the former governor will remain in custody pending the court’s decision on his bail request.

El-Rufai is currently facing prosecution by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over multiple counts bordering on alleged financial impropriety and abuse of office during his tenure.

Reacting to the development, El-Rufai’s counsel, Ukpon Akpan, criticised the repeated postponement of the bail hearing, describing it as “politically motivated.” He expressed concern over what he termed unnecessary delays in the judicial process.

The former governor arrived at the court premises at about 9 a.m. in a convoy, accompanied by officials of the anti-graft agency and operatives of the Department of State Services, who ensured tight security throughout the proceedings.

Supporters of the embattled politician gathered outside the courtroom during the hearing, while security personnel restricted movement within the vicinity to maintain order.

With the adjournment, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain is expected to remain in detention until June, when the court will determine whether to grant him bail or order his continued custody.
