Former Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi, has expressed his reservations about Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League title under manager Mikel Arteta. While acknowledging Arteta’s positive impact on the team, Mikel questioned whether the Spaniard has what it takes to lead the Gunners to ultimate success.
Speaking on his Obi One Podcast, Mikel praised Arteta’s improvements to the team, saying, “He’s massively improved the squad, the team, the way they play, and the way the fans want to see an Arsenal team play.” However, he cast doubt on Arsenal’s ability to win major trophies under Arteta’s leadership, stating, “Now, is he the guy to take Arsenal to the next level, which is winning the Premier League, the Champions League? I don’t see that.”
Mikel emphasized that Arsenal’s mentality should shift from merely competing to securing trophies. “Arsenal fans keep talking about competing. No. They’ve got to win it. Win it,” he said, referencing the club’s last league title win in 2004. With Arsenal currently second in the Premier League title race, only time will tell if they can prove Mikel’s doubts wrong and secure their first league triumph in two decades.
