Nigeria’s Super Falcons will not be at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after a campaign that ended in disappointment, prompting the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to take decisive action.
The NFF Executive Committee on Monday directed the entire technical crew of the nine-time African champions to step down with immediate effect.
The move comes after the Falcons suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the African playoffs, effectively ending their hopes of securing a place at the tournament in Brazil.
Nigeria’s troubles began at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where the Falcons endured a historic early exit. For the first time in their history, they were eliminated at the quarter-final stage after a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon.
The result denied Nigeria an automatic World Cup ticket and forced the team into the playoffs, where South Africa eventually delivered another blow to their qualification hopes.
The setbacks have now triggered a major shake-up around a team that has long dominated women’s football on the continent.
With the World Cup now out of reach, the NFF’s decision signals the beginning of what could be a fresh rebuilding phase for the Super Falcons.
