A United States-based Nigerian woman, Abayomi Whint, has been officially sworn in as a judge for the Kings County New York Civil Court. The announcement was made in a video titled, *“Welcome to the bench, Your Honor!”* shared on her Instagram page on January 23, 2025. Whint was one of eight candidates elected as judges in Brooklyn during the November 2024 elections.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at Brooklyn Law School, where Whint took the oath of office surrounded by her family and friends, who were dressed in white and green to celebrate the occasion. During the ceremony, she declared, *“…to discharge the duties of the office of judge for the Kings County New York Civil Court, according to the best of my ability. So help me God.”* Her words were met with cheers and applause from her loved ones.



With over 20 years of legal experience, Whint has primarily practiced law in the public sector. She is a seasoned litigator, certified mediator, and arbitrator, specializing in conflict resolution. Beyond her legal expertise, Whint has also been actively involved in organizational leadership, promoting cultures of belonging, team building, and restorative practices. She serves as a Restorative Circle Keeper, emphasizing the importance of healing and reconciliation in her work.
