President Bola Tinubu on Monday said his administration is delivering on its pledge to improve the living standards of Nigerians through critical infrastructure projects, following the inauguration of newly rehabilitated and expanded roads from the Karu Interchange to the Customs Clinic Junction and other adjoining roads in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The inauguration comes a week after the commissioning of the satellite town water network in the Karu district.
Represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu said the road projects demonstrate the government’s commitment to easing urban congestion and boosting economic activities.
According to the president, the road expansion and rehabilitation go beyond physical construction, as they are aimed at revitalising the local economy and improving residents’ daily lives.
“When we assumed office in 2023, we recognised that true development must reach where the people actually live, work and commute,” Tinubu said.
“Indeed, this project stands as a clear testament to our promise to resolve urban congestion and uplift the living standards of our people. It is a direct product of our Renewed Hope Agenda in action.”
He noted that the Karu corridor, a major gateway linking the FCT with neighbouring states, had long suffered from severe traffic congestion that affected productivity and commuters.
Tinubu said the upgraded roads have significantly reduced travel time, eliminated persistent traffic gridlocks and created a more conducive environment for businesses.
“A premium road network must also prioritize the safety of its users both day and night. To ensure maximum security along this corridor, the Federal Capital Territory Administration has installed modern solar-powered streetlights along the entire road network, illuminating dark stretches, drastically reducing nighttime crime, and improving visibility for motorists,” he said.
The president credited the ongoing transformation across Abuja to the leadership of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, praising his supervision of the administration’s urban renewal programme.
“I sincerely commend the minister and his team. By prioritizing high-density, strategic satellite nodes like Karu alongside the city center, the FCT Administration is validating our governance philosophy: that the wealth of this territory must yield practical, everyday comfort for all socio-economic classes,” he said.
Tinubu also commended the contractor, Abdul-Val Nigeria Limited, for delivering the project on schedule and maintaining high standards.
“I also commend the contractor Abdul-Val Nigeria Limited for quality work and timely delivery. They have demonstrated that Nigerian firms can match international benchmarks for quality, structural integrity, and project management,” he added.
The president urged traditional rulers, market women, youth leaders and residents of Karu to safeguard the roads by preventing vandalism and indiscriminate waste disposal that could block drainage systems.
Earlier, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike described Tinubu’s support for the territory as unprecedented, saying it reflects the administration’s commitment to improving residents’ welfare.
He said the pace of infrastructure development in Abuja has impressed residents and assured them that the projects would continue.
Wike also praised the contractor for executing the Karu road project in line with the Federal Government’s infrastructure development agenda.
Providing an overview of the project, the Coordinator of the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD), Hon. Zulkiflu Abdulkadir, said improving infrastructure in satellite towns and area councils remains central to the FCT’s development strategy.
He explained that the project includes solar-powered streetlights, drainage systems and pedestrian walkways, all of which are expected to enhance economic and social activities in Karu, the FCT’s most populated satellite town.
