Alaafin of Oyo Throne Dispute: Prince Lukman Gbadegesin Heads to Court

A new twist has emerged in the ongoing dispute over the throne of the Alaafin of Oyo, as Prince Lukman Gbadegesin, one of the contestants for the position, has filed a lawsuit challenging the appointment of Prince Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin by Governor Seyi Makinde.

According to reports, Gbadegesin was recommended by a faction of the Oyomesi, the traditional kingmakers of the Alaafin stool. However, Governor Makinde approved Owoade’s appointment on January 10 and presented him with the staff of office, sparking a heated dispute between the kingmakers and the governor.

In a pre-action notice signed by his lawyer, Adekunle Sobaloju SAN, Gbadegesin argued that the governor’s actions violate the Oyo State Chiefs’ Law 2000 and the Alaafin Chieftaincy Declaration of 1961. The notice seeks an order setting aside Owoade’s appointment and a declaration that Gbadegesin was validly selected and appointed by the kingmakers.

The dispute has sparked widespread debate, with many criticizing Governor Makinde’s decision to override the kingmakers’ recommendation. The Oyomesi have accused the governor of usurping their powers and violating tradition. The case is expected to be heard in court soon, and its outcome will likely have significant implications for the future of the Alaafin stool.
