The Benue State House of Assembly has ordered the immediate suspension of the ongoing primary school teachers’ recruitment by the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). This decision was made during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Chief Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh.
The House also summoned the Executive Chairman of SUBEB to appear before it next Tuesday at 10:00 am. The chairman is expected to explain the circumstances surrounding the introduction of non-professional degree holders in education with a cut-off mark of 25% in the aptitude test.
Additionally, SUBEB has been directed to provide the House with the need assessment of teachers’ requirements on a school-by-school basis from each local government. They must also provide the results of all candidates who participated in the recruitment exercise and the law enabling the board to conduct the recruitment.
The decision follows a motion of urgent public importance moved by Mr. Douglas Akya, representing Makurdi South constituency. Akya expressed concerns that the board shortlisted graduates without qualifications in education, contrary to the requirements specified in the advertisement.
In another development, the House directed the Executive Secretary of the Benue State Science and Technical Education Board to convert Government Day Secondary School Aliade to a Government Science and Technical College. The House also urged the Governor to reinstate the appointments of all staff terminated at Mbatiav Science and Technical College and Government Science and Technical College Aondona.
