A gun battle between security operatives and gunmen in Anambra State has left a policeman and a local vigilante member injured. The incident occurred on Thursday evening when the Anambra State Joint Security Team intercepted the armed men on Umuchu-Amesi-Uga Road in Aguata Local Government Area.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the gunmen also burnt down two security operational vehicles during the exchange of fire. Ikenga stated that the security operatives recovered a branded blue Hilux vehicle with Plate Number: GDD 440 TJ, suspected to have been stolen from a member of the public.
The police spokesperson added that the armed men were trailed after resisting an attack on a police checkpoint at Ajali, Orumba North Local Government Area. During the gun duel, one police personnel and one AVG operative sustained gunshot injuries and are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
Joint operations are still ongoing in the area, and further developments will be communicated.
