Tensions Erupt at Cross River PDP Secretariat as Protesters Demand Ousted Chairman Stays Out

The Cross River State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) witnessed a dramatic protest on Monday as party members rallied against the potential reinstatement of the ousted state chairman, Mr. Venatius Ikem.

Protesters, comprising representatives from wards and local government chapters across the state, carried placards with bold inscriptions such as “Ikem Must Go,” “SWC’s Decision is Final,” and “All Chapters Reject Vena.” They warned of mass defections should Ikem return to power.

Leading the protest, Calabar Municipality Chairman, Mr. Bassey Asuquo, expressed that Ikem’s removal marked a turning point for the party’s progress. “His leadership stunted our growth. We stand with the State Working Committee’s decision to let him go. If he returns, the party will lose its people,” Asuquo declared.

Chief Dennis Nkiri, Deputy State Chairman, addressed the demonstrators, promising that the party’s best interests would prevail. Echoing this, State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Mike Ojisi, remarked, “We must ensure the party stays afloat by removing obstacles.”

Ikem’s removal, announced two weeks ago by the State Working Committee, cited allegations of financial impropriety, high-handedness, and ineffectiveness. However, the embattled former chairman has labeled the action unconstitutional and vowed legal redress.
