Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called for an end to political interference, legal technicalities and unnecessary delays that hinder the effective administration of justice in Nigeria.
Fubara made the call on Saturday at the 66th annual conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The governor stressed that the judiciary remains a crucial pillar of democracy, the rule of law and good governance, noting that courts must be allowed to deliver justice without undue interference or excessive procedural obstacles.
He identified several challenges undermining the justice system, including unfair precedents, technicalities, limited access to justice, prolonged delays, rigid procedures, political manipulation and corruption.
According to Fubara, these practices have weakened public confidence in the judiciary and negatively affected the reputation of both the bench and the legal profession.
He said courts should not be regarded solely as places for settling disputes but as institutions where every citizen can seek protection and justice, particularly ordinary Nigerians with limited access to power and influence.
“The courts are not merely venues for resolving social disputes. They serve as the ultimate refuge for all, including the common man like myself,” he said.
Fubara also urged judges to consider the wider impact of their decisions on society, stressing that effective justice is closely connected to law, order and national development.
He called on judicial officers to demonstrate independence, courage and integrity, warning that judges must not become mere conformists or apologists if they are to effectively protect democracy and uphold the rule of law.
The governor further argued that Nigeria’s legal framework must remain responsive to contemporary realities, insisting that justice should not be hindered by outdated precedents, procedural technicalities, delays, political interference or corruption.
Fubara urged members of the bench and bar to work towards rebuilding public trust in the justice system by promoting fairness, accountability and integrity.
He also encouraged legal practitioners and judicial officers to reflect on their responsibilities to society and renew their commitment to public service, compassion and the pursuit of justice.
