A group of protesters from the All Progressives Congress (APC) Akida Forum stormed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters on Monday, submitting a petition against Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle. The petition alleges Matawalle’s involvement in a staggering N390 billion fraud during his tenure as Zamfara State’s Governor.
EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, assured the protesters that the Commission is committed to upholding justice and will thoroughly investigate the claims. “The EFCC will exhaust all avenues to investigate every act of economic and financial crime,” Oyewale stated, acknowledging Nigerians’ right to peaceful protest [1).
This development follows previous allegations of corruption against Matawalle, including mismanagement of public funds and resources during his governorship from 2019 to 2023. In May 2023, the EFCC announced an investigation into Matawalle’s alleged involvement in massive corruption, fictitious contracts, and diversion of over N70 billion.
The EFCC has pledged to convey the protesters’ message to Executive Chairman Ola Olukoyede, ensuring necessary action is taken. This move demonstrates the Commission’s commitment to combating corruption and promoting accountability in public office.
