NLC, TUC Threaten Industrial Action Over Minimum Wage, Electricity Tariff

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have issued a joint statement warning their civil society allies of an impending industrial action if the government fails to meet their demands by May 31.

The labour unions are demanding a reversal of the recent electricity tariff hike and the conclusion of the new minimum wage negotiations.

They gave the federal government and the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) until the end of May to reverse the tariff hike.

The unions said if their demands are not met, they will embark on a national strike, which could potentially paralyze economic activities in the country.

The NLC and TUC leaders, Ayuba Wabba and Quadri Olaleye, respectively, signed the joint communique, which emphasized the need for urgent action to address the suffering of Nigerian workers.

The unions have been negotiating with the government for months, but have yet to reach an agreement on the minimum wage and electricity tariff.
