The Nasarawa State Government has accused former Governor and Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura and former Inspector-General of Police, IGP Muhammad Abubakar Adamu (Rtd.), of allegedly sponsoring youths who disrupted the courtesy visit of Vice President Kashim Shettima to the Emir of Lafia on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.
The government also announced that it had directed the Department of State Services (DSS) to immediately investigate the incident and identify those responsible, including their alleged sponsors.
In a press release signed by the Secretary to the Government of Nasarawa State, Shuaibu Magaji Labaran, Ph.D., SAN, the state government explained that Vice President Shettima was in Lafia to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the APC presidential campaign rally ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the statement, as part of his visit, the Vice President paid a courtesy visit to His Royal Highness, the Emir of Lafia and Chairman of the Nasarawa State Council of Chiefs, in recognition of the importance of the traditional institution.
However, the government expressed regret that the traditional homage was disrupted by what it described as ignoble acts allegedly perpetrated by some irate youths suspected of being sponsored by high-profile personalities, including Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura and former IGP Muhammad Abubakar Adamu.
The statement alleged that the incident was deliberately orchestrated to tarnish the image of the Nasarawa State Government and its people.
Describing the disruption as reckless, deliberate and an act of disregard for constituted authorities, the government maintained that such conduct was unacceptable, particularly given the exalted office of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Consequently, the state government directed the DSS to commence a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify the perpetrators and uncover those allegedly behind the disruption.
It further stated that anyone found culpable would be made to face the full weight of the law.
The government, however, called on residents of Nasarawa State to remain calm, law-abiding and peaceful while going about their daily activities.
The development has placed the incident surrounding the Vice President’s visit under security and political scrutiny as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
