The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a statement disassociating itself from a report circulating in the media claiming it released a list of 58 former governors under investigation for corruption involving N2.18 trillion.
According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the report is “false and mischievous” and the commission did not issue the list nor discuss the investigation with any media outlet.
The statement described the report as a “phantom report” and a “disingenuous fabrication” aimed at achieving unknown motives.
Oyewale urged the public to disregard the report and advised the media to verify information directly with the commission to prevent spreading false information.
The EFCC had earlier stated it would consider a fresh petition regarding the alleged N70 billion corruption case of Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle.
The commission’s acting Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwajuren, made this known while addressing protesters at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Friday.
On May 18, 2023, the EFCC announced it was investigating corruption activities, award of phantom contracts, and diversion of over N70bn allegedly carried out by Matawalle during his tenure as Zamfara State governor between 2019 and 2023.
The commission says it remained committed to conducting thorough investigations and combating corruption.
