Popular Traditionalist Pleads for Forgiveness Over Alleged Qur’an Burning

November 16, Kwara State: Abdulazeez Adegbola, popularly known as Tani Olohun, has pleaded with the Muslim community to forgive him for allegedly burning the Qur’an and defaming certain Muslims in the state. Speaking in court after being granted bail, Tani Olohun made an emotional plea to the court and the Muslim community.

The cases against Tani Olohun were brought before Magistrate Adam by Sheikh Labeeb Lagbaji and Modrasat Muhammed, led by Professor Abubakar Aliagan. The charges include the alleged burning of the Qur’an and other related offenses.

During his address to the court, Tani Olohun, an Isese adherent, expressed regret for his actions and appealed to “Alfa Labeeb,” one of the applicants, and the Muslim community for forgiveness. He acknowledged that he was unaware that burning the Qur’an was a criminal offense and immediately removed the video of the incident from his social media account.

Tani Olohun stated, “I beg all my prosecutors and the Muslims all over to forgive me, and I promise I will not repeat such an act of posting negative videos on social media.”

Magistrate A.S Adam, presiding over the court, granted Tani Olohun bail in the sum of N2 million, along with three sureties in the same amount. The sureties must own landed property within the court’s jurisdiction or in Oyo State.

The matter has been adjourned until January 9, 2024.

The counsel for the complainants, Taofeeq Olateju and Y.Y Ajibade, did not oppose Tani Olohun’s bail application as presented by his counsel, Barrister Ademola Banks.

With his bail in this case, Tani Olohun has now been released from custody for the four different cases he is facing regarding the alleged offenses of defamation and burning of the Qur’an in Ilorin. He was initially arraigned before Magistrate Muhammed Ibrahim for insulting Ilorin elders, a case brought against him by the Association of Proud Sons and Daughters of Ilorin (Ogo Ilorin). Later, another case was lodged against him at the Upper Area Court by Alfa Okutagidi’s counsel.
