United States President Donald Trump has urged FIFA to award a future FIFA World Cup exclusively to the United States, saying the tournament should no longer be jointly hosted with Canada and Mexico.
Trump made the remarks on Friday during a FIFA World Cup reception at Trump Tower in New York ahead of Sunday’s final between Spain and Argentina. Addressing FIFA President Gianni Infantino, he praised the competition before suggesting the US should host the event on its own next time.
“You should choose the United States of America again. This time we will leave Canada and Mexico out,” Trump said.
He also recommended that FIFA award the next available tournament to another country before returning it to the United States.
“Pick somebody else for the next one, and that will take some of the anger, hatred and steam out of everyone,” he added.
Trump further revealed that Infantino had previously mentioned the possibility of a future World Cup jointly hosted by the United States and China.
“But Gianni also had another idea. He said we could do China and United States, so you have a nice short flight between games. The players would love that,” Trump said jokingly.
The next men’s World Cup available for bidding is the 2038 edition. FIFA has already confirmed Spain, Portugal and Morocco as hosts of the 2030 tournament, with opening matches set to be played in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay to mark the competition’s 100th anniversary. Saudi Arabia will stage the 2034 World Cup.
Under FIFA’s continental rotation policy, member associations from North America and Oceania will be eligible to compete for hosting rights to the 2038 tournament when the bidding process opens.
The United States is currently preparing to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico, marking the first time the men’s tournament will be staged across three countries.
