The Southern Political Progressives Amalgamation Forum has urged the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to be strategic in selecting its vice-presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election, saying the choice could determine the party’s chances of defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement signed by Comrades Anga Fidelis, Eniafe Ayomide, and Johnson Iheanacho, the group advised the party to choose a running mate with strong electoral appeal and wide acceptance across Southern Nigeria.
The Forum’s comments followed reports suggesting that former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, is being considered as the running mate to ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
According to the group, the party should focus on building a ticket capable of attracting support from all six geopolitical zones. It said the vice-presidential candidate should possess national appeal, political experience, grassroots influence, and the ability to complement the presidential flag bearer.
It described the vice-presidential selection as a crucial strategic decision that could shape the outcome of the 2027 election, urging the ADC to prioritise a candidate who enjoys broad public acceptance and can strengthen the party’s electoral prospects.
The Forum also called on the ADC leadership to promote unity within the party and make decisions that inspire confidence among members and supporters.
It added that forming a broad-based coalition across different regions and interest groups would be essential if the opposition party hopes to mount a strong challenge against the APC.
Expressing optimism about the party’s prospects, the Forum said the ADC could significantly improve its chances in the 2027 presidential election by presenting a united, inclusive, and broadly acceptable ticket.
As of the time of the statement, neither the ADC nor Rotimi Amaechi had publicly reacted to the Forum’s recommendations.
