Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has threatened legal action against Primate Babatunde Elijah Ayodele of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, demanding N10 billion in damages over alleged defamatory remarks.
In a statement released by his media aide, Hon. Saifullahi Hassan, Kwankwaso’s legal team disclosed that a formal demand letter dated June 11, 2026, had been sent to the cleric. The letter accused Ayodele of making and circulating false claims suggesting that Kwankwaso is disloyal to Peter Obi, would eventually betray him, and was financially induced to accept the vice-presidential position on the NDC ticket.
The legal team described the comments as malicious, baseless, and damaging to Kwankwaso’s reputation, emphasizing his long record of public service, which includes serving as a two-term governor of Kano State, former Minister of Defence, senator, and presidential candidate.
According to the letter, Ayodele made the statements during a church gathering that was recorded and broadcast to a wide audience through social media and live streaming platforms. The lawyers argued that the remarks were intended to question Kwankwaso’s integrity, sincerity, and credibility as Peter Obi’s running mate.
Kwankwaso’s lawyers demanded that Ayodele issue an immediate and unconditional retraction, accompanied by a public apology across all platforms where the comments appeared. They also requested a written commitment that he would refrain from making similar statements in the future.
The legal notice warned that failure to comply within 24 hours would result in court proceedings seeking N10 billion in damages, legal costs, and other remedies deemed appropriate by the court. The lawyers maintained that the action was necessary to protect Kwankwaso’s reputation from what they described as false and injurious allegations.
