South Africa captain Ronwen Williams has appealed to Africans across the continent to rally behind his team during the ongoing tournament, urging supporters to put politics aside and embrace African unity.
Speaking on the emotional toll criticism has taken on the squad, Williams said the lack of support from fellow African nations has been mentally challenging for the players.
According to the South African goalkeeper, it is disheartening to go online and discover that many Africans are rooting against his country.
“Everything is affecting us mentally. Imagine going online and seeing that the entire Africa, no country is supporting you. It breaks you,” Williams said.
He stressed that Africa should remain united regardless of political disagreements, calling on people across the continent to show love and support for one another.
“Africa is one. We should love and support each other,” he added.
Williams’ comments come amid growing tensions and criticism directed at South Africa from some quarters across the continent. While the captain called for unity and solidarity among Africans, critics have pointed out that he did not address concerns over the actions of some South Africans that have fueled resentment in other African countries.
His remarks have since sparked debate online, with supporters praising his call for continental unity, while others argue that genuine unity must also involve confronting issues that have strained relations between South Africa and other African nations.
As the tournament progresses, Williams hopes that football can serve as a platform to bring Africans together despite their differences.
