TCN Announces Planned Blackout in Five Northern States, Parts of Niger Republic

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a planned power outage that will affect five northern states and parts of the Niger Republic due to scheduled maintenance work on its transmission infrastructure.
TCN disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday by its spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah.
According to the company, the blackout is necessitated by annual maintenance on the Mando–Kumbotso 330kV Transmission Line, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 31, 2026.
The maintenance exercise will result in a temporary disruption of electricity supply to customers served by the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) across Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states, as well as parts of Bauchi and Yobe states. Some customers in Gazaoua, located in the Niger Republic, will also be affected.
TCN explained that the outage is required to enable its technical team to repair a damaged Red Phase Conductor on Tower T187 along the transmission line route.
“The outage is necessary to enable TCN’s maintenance crew to amend a damaged Red Phase Conductor on Tower T187 along the line route,” the statement said.
“Consequently, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) will be unable to off-take electricity to its customers across Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States, as well as parts of Bauchi and Yobe States; customers in Gazaoua (Niger Republic) would also be affected by the outage.”
The company stated that the maintenance work is expected to commence at 9:00 a.m. and conclude by 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.
However, TCN did not specify the exact time electricity supply would be restored to the affected areas after the completion of the maintenance exercise.
The transmission firm appealed for understanding from affected customers, noting that the maintenance is necessary to ensure the continued reliability and stability of the power transmission network.
