Davido Plans to Reclaim Music Masters From Sony Before Retirement

Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed plans to buy back the rights to his music masters from Sony Music Entertainment before retiring from the music industry.
The award-winning singer made the disclosure during an appearance on The Long Form podcast, where he stressed the importance of ownership in the music business.
According to Davido, regaining control of his music catalogue is a key part of his long-term plans, as he intends to pass on the rights and royalties from his songs to his children.
“I have a good music contract. But the most important thing is ownership. I plan to get my masters back from Sony soon. With that I can give each of my kid songs they will keep earning royalties from even after I retire,” he said.
The singer explained that owning music masters provides artists with greater control over their work and the revenue generated from it. He noted that securing ownership of his catalogue would allow his children to continue benefiting financially from his music long after he leaves the industry.
Davido also urged artists and industry stakeholders to pay closer attention to the business aspect of music, emphasizing that commercial decisions can be just as important as creative success.
His comments add to the growing conversation within the global music industry about artists seeking ownership of their master recordings and intellectual property rights as a means of building long-term wealth and preserving their legacies.
