Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, on Thursday declared that he now operates as a “freelance politician,” signaling a shift away from firm allegiance to any political party.
The governor made the remark while receiving Peter Obi, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alongside stakeholders from Nigeria’s South-East at the Government House in Bauchi.
Speaking after the meeting, Mohammed emphasized that the engagement was centered on national unity and cooperation rather than partisan interests.
“Neither the PDP nor the ADC is standing alone. I consider myself a freelance politician now, and even his party is facing uncertainty. We are all awaiting judicial clarity,” he said.
“Clearly, we belong to the opposition, which is why this remains a political engagement. However, we will not reveal all the details of our discussions,” the governor added.
Mohammed further explained that ongoing consultations among political actors are aimed at exploring alliances and possible collaborations ahead of upcoming elections. His comments come amid growing speculation about political realignments within opposition parties.
Describing Obi’s visit as significant, the governor said it reflects efforts to strengthen inter-regional ties and promote a shared vision for Nigeria’s future.
“He is advocating unity, bridge-building, and a better future for Nigeria. These are values we share as a government and as a people, and we are truly honoured by his visit,” Mohammed stated.
