Turkey Pledges Support for Nigeria’s Anti-Terrorism Efforts — Erdogan

Turkey has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria as it confronts persistent security challenges, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledging stronger cooperation in counterterrorism efforts.

Speaking at a joint press briefing with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Ankara during the Nigerian leader’s official visit, Erdogan said Türkiye is ready to deepen collaboration with Nigeria, particularly in military training and intelligence sharing. He commended Tinubu’s administration for taking decisive action against terrorism and assured that Turkey stands in solidarity with the Nigerian people.

Erdogan, according to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, said Turkey is prepared to share its extensive experience in counterterrorism, noting that extremist groups—especially those operating in the Sahel—continue to threaten regional stability across Africa.

During the visit, Nigerian officials engaged with major Turkish defence companies, expressing optimism that the discussions would yield positive outcomes. Erdogan said both sides examined opportunities to strengthen cooperation within the defence sector.

On the economic front, the Turkish president disclosed that both countries reaffirmed their $5 billion trade target and explored practical steps to expand bilateral trade. He welcomed the establishment of the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) as a platform to advance economic cooperation.

Erdogan said Tinubu’s visit underscored Nigeria’s strong commitment to deepening economic ties, adding that Türkiye supports investments in Nigeria and encourages collaboration between Turkish energy firms and Nigerian counterparts. He highlighted Nigeria’s potential as Africa’s leading oil and gas producer and its strategic role in reshaping the continent’s energy landscape.

Nigeria has been battling insurgency for more than 12 years, a conflict that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced many others. President Tinubu departed Abuja on Monday for the state visit, which aims to reinforce longstanding bilateral relations and expand cooperation in security, education, innovation, aviation, and social development.
