The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is riding a wave of excitement following the defection of Rabiu Kwankwaso, describing his arrival as a major turning point that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of 2027.
Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and the last presidential candidate of the New Nigerian People’s Party, has thrown his weight behind the ADC, urging his loyal supporters across the country to follow suit. The party says his entry has already triggered a surge in interest and registrations, reinforcing talks of a growing coalition for change.
According to the party’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, Kwankwaso’s grassroots appeal and political experience make him a strong asset in the push for a new direction in Nigeria.
But while the ADC celebrates, cracks appear to be widening within the All Progressives Congress (APC). In Benue State, several governorship hopefuls are walking away from the party in the aftermath of its national convention.
Among them is former Attorney-General, Michael Aondoakaa, who cited “careful reflection” and consultations as reasons for his exit. He is joined by fellow aspirant Godwin Tyoacimin, while Jeffrey Kuraun has been openly engaging with Samuel Ortom of the Peoples Democratic Party. Another contender, Sebastine Hon, has also hinted that a major decision is on the way.
In Oyo State, the APC is battling a different issue—damage control. The party has dismissed a viral list claiming to name consensus candidates for the 2027 elections as fake and provocative. Spokesperson Olawale Sadare assured members that an investigation is underway to uncover those behind the misinformation, stressing that no official selection process has begun.
As political alignments begin to shift, Kwankwaso’s move may just be the first of many ahead of what promises to be a fiercely contested 2027 election.
