US Delivers Military Supplies to Nigeria to Boost Security Cooperation

The United States has supplied military equipment to Nigerian security agencies as part of efforts to strengthen security operations across the country.

The delivery was announced on Tuesday in a post on X by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), which said the supplies were handed over in Abuja.

“U.S. forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners in Abuja. This delivery supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and underscores our shared security partnership,” AFRICOM stated.

The Federal Government had earlier said the U.S. reaffirmed its commitment to expanding security cooperation with Nigeria, including enhanced intelligence sharing, defence equipment, and other support to boost ongoing efforts against terrorism and violent extremism.

In November, the Nigerian government sent a high-level delegation to Washington to deepen security ties and explore new areas of collaboration. The delegation, led by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, held meetings with senior officials from the U.S. Congress, the White House Faith Office, the State Department, the National Security Council, and the Department of War.

Other members of the delegation included the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi; Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lieutenant General Emmanuel Undiandeye; Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and representatives of the Office of the National Security Adviser.

During the engagements, the Nigerian team rejected claims of genocide in the country, stressing that insecurity affects communities across religious and ethnic divides. The delegation said such narratives misrepresent the situation and risk deepening divisions among Nigerians.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the talks helped correct misconceptions about Nigeria, strengthened mutual trust, and promoted a practical, solution-oriented partnership with the United States, particularly in protecting vulnerable communities in the Middle Belt.

According to him, both countries agreed to adopt a non-binding cooperation framework and set up a Joint Working Group to coordinate implementation of agreed areas of collaboration. Nigeria also reaffirmed its commitment to improving civilian protection.

Onanuga added that the U.S. expressed readiness to provide additional support, including humanitarian assistance for affected communities in the Middle Belt and technical aid to enhance early-warning systems, while the Federal Government assured citizens that decisive steps are being taken to address security challenges nationwide.
